Question:
My wife has MS (progressive) she has had and continues to have many
problems although she's keeping her head above water for now.
She often has bouts with dizziness, sometimes for days. Her Neurolgist
tells her that he has other MS patients who have similar symptoms. I was
wondering if anyone here has had the same experience. Where is a good
sorce for further info on this? I was hoping to tap into the collective wisdom and experience of this group to answer my question.
Answer:
I also deal with dizzyness and vertigo. I'm currently having a bout of it
that started last weekend thats the worst I've had. I tried Dramamine and it
helps with the associated nausea quite a bit. I don't think there is much
that can be done about the dizzyness except maybe a drug called Antivert.
I just had an episode (lasted 1-1/2 weeks) and have had a few others before.
Spoke to my neuro. Meclazine (Antivert) sometimes is prescribed for dizziness
due to inner ear infections, though not for MS. The one time I took it, it did nothing for me except make me dizzy and fatigued.
I asked a non-neuro M.D. this time if those were indeed possible "side" effects and she said yes, it affects the CNS (central nervous system). She also prescribes tiny (2mg) doses of Valium. I asked what does that do for the
dizziness? She said, Nothing. But sometimes it helps people handle it.
So there you have it--not very helpful, right? The good thing is, it went away every time. A friend lent me a cane, I leaned on walls and counters, and
friends drove me where I needed to go.
